VISION
Our vision is to develop character in our nation one student at a time by using curriculum
geared towards inculcating the ethical behavior of America’s youth, developing their sense of
citizenship and leadership skills, and raising the achievement levels of all students particularly
low performing and disadvantaged students, by using reading instruction based upon
scientifically replicable, reliable research. |

BACKGROUND
Founded in 2001 by business and community leaders, the Coalition to Improve Education (C.I.E.), a 501(C)3 nonprofit corporation was formed to establish Leadership Literacy Centers in low performing school districts throughout the state. The centers will serve as catalyst to unify and collaborate with other established community based organizations to serve students and their families in low performing school districts by providing them with opportunities to attain the American dream.
In June 2003, C.I.E. sponsored its first Summer Leadership & Literacy Program in Lake Elsinore. C.I.E. pledged to work with school officials to increase reading fluency and character of those participating in the program. Serving students struggling with learning disabilities, the program increased the reading fluency of every student with the highest increase of 41 words per minute. In addition to reading instruction, students learned valuable character traits such as “perseverance” and “making wise choices”.
Realizing the tremendous need to offer expanded services, C.I.E. has launched a campaign to recruit members of the business community to join their efforts to establish permanent opportunity centers throughout the state- beginning in the Inland Empire. Benefits to the business community will include short-term and long-term benefits. For example, one short-term benefit for business involvement is the improvement of test scores in the surrounding school districts thus fostering economic growth in the real estate market. An example of a long-term benefit is a work-force with ethical standards of behavior. |
